The proportion of the total community made up of each species is arranged in descending order of abundance. Therefore in a sample where many species have a similar abundance, the plot will descend slowly with increasing i, whereas in a sample heavily dominated by large numbers of just a few species, the plot will drop away steeply as i increases.
